Star Citizen

Post by Raiah »

It just didn't seem right that we have a topic for Elite: Dangerous but not for the other big upcoming space sim, Star Citizen. (Well, if Elite is big Star Citizen is a giant. Elites total funding has passed 3 million $, Star Citizen just passed 20 million $. Also seem like there is more to do outside your ship than in Elite.)

Star Citizen is a persistent-world space flight sim (a genre I'm very happy to see return) with a FPS component (not quite clear exactly how well developed it is). Squadron 42, which will be a single-player game with a campaign (likely more combat focused and not as open) is being developed together with the main game, taking place in the same universe and using the same engine.

More info can be found on the official website, Roberts Space Industries.

So to start of this topic here's a recently released trailer, youtube. It isn't gameplay, but it is all in-game rendered (well, one short scene seem to be from the dev/mod tools).

This one looks also interesting though I'm more like Elite fan. Still remember long night sessions at 80's playing original Elite with C64 ;)

Any plans for multiplayer in Star Citizen?

Yes, the main game of Star Citizen is multiplayer, and from the sound of things (been reading up a bit today) it'll have one big persistent galaxy rather than the Elite approach with smaller servers.

Really like the idea of being able to have multiple players crew a larger ship together.

Character Profiles/Backgrounds will be in the game by default as well, that's nice. If EVE can have a RP community SC definitely will :p

EDIT: OK, it's not just a big persistent server. You'll probably be able to run your own server as well as play the sandbox part in single player as well, considering the modding tools.

Funding has passed 22 million and is well on its way to 23 million.

Here's Star Citizen's rather interesting release schedule:
  • Hangar Module - August 2013
Already released, available for everyone with a game package (alpha or beta access not needed, only module not to require this) and eligible ship. Will let you load up you hanger and walk around and get in to your ship.
  • Dogfighting Module - December 2013
Will let you take a ship in your hanger and fight other players or AI with it. Will also see more ship equipment added to allow for customization.
  • Social / Planetside module - March-April 2014
Early planetside (not clear how many planets) with bars and stores and so on. Will also include various social aspects like chatting and visiting others hangers.
  • FPS / Ship Boarding Module - Summer 2014
Name should really say it all. Will contain ship boarding and FPS component.
  • Squadron 42 / Singleplayer Alpha - August 2014
    Alpha of the singleplayer game.
  • Persistent Universe Module / Beta - End of 2014
Alpha release of the open persistent world.
  • Release - Early 2015
As of this moment there are only 9,757 alpha slots left so if any of you like the sound of this game and want in before launch you'll want to get an alpha package sooner rather than later.

Wow, didn't realize it was available in 4K. Wonder why the Aurora trailer from just a week earlier is only 1080p.

Anyway, best part about the trailer isn't that it's 4K, best part is that it's was rendered in-engine, using real game assets, in real-time. It's a great showcase of the graphical potential of the game.

Still, can't wait to see some gameplay from the dogfighting module though.

After a couple delays Arena Commander, the Star Citizen Dogfighting module is a go and is currently being uploaded to the servers for download. As soon as Arena Commander is available for download everyone who has alpha access or an Arena Commander pass can download it and play the singleplayer parts of it. Multiplayer will roll out to backers over time as the servers scale up.
