Worth pointing out that they plan to continue developing the game after launch, both smaller additions (free) and larger expansions (will cost money, unless you've got the expansion pass which is no longer available) such as planetary landings and leaving your ship to walk stations or board other ships.
If you buy the game now you'll get the mercenary edition which includes and exclusive set of paint jobs, an exclusive ship decal and starts you of with a second ship (decent upgrade to the default one, probably your first upgrade unless you plan on going full freight/mining pilot).
While I'm more exited for Star Citizen (boils down to the fact that a smaller hand made game space seems more interesting to me, Elite's procedurally generated full scale Milky Way definitely have its strengths though) I've had a lot of fun with Elite already so I can definitely recommend it.

I'm looking forwards to Elite Dangerous, having been old enough to remember playing the original. Not sure if I should be proud of that or not
I backed the Kickstarter and have spent a fair amount of time in Alpha and Beta, certainly enough to know it will be an excellent game - although I stopped playing a while back so I'm fresh for launch (Dec 16th although iirc its now in Gamma - soft launch, hopefully no pre actual launch wipe)
I plan on finishing off my 16th SWTOR character whilst the 12*XP thing is still on and then playing the Xpac a bit before playing Elite over Christmas

Here's the launch trailer.

Opens sayings "Not actual game footage" should probably have said "Not in any way representative of anything besides art-style".
As much as I love the game, if only supercruise looked and worked like that and even my Eagle could manoeuvre in any way remotely like those Cobras, it would be a better game.
EDIT: Well, that was fast. Here's a version "with added honest"

Ouch...

Out now!
All ships not yet in...
Several originally promised features missing in action...
It's a fun game though and if you like this type of game, well, there hasn't been a lot of them in a long time. Just don't get it intending to play it multiplayer with a friend or two. For a game that has been built with multiplayer in mind and even sacrificed some features because of it, it's missing a whole lot of multiplayer functionality at the moment. Something basic like teaming up and doing missions together just isn't possible.

Anyone else playing E:D? "Wings" extension now released free for all players. That would enable proper co-op playing. If you are playing feel free to add CMDR Maxwell Sloan to you friends list and invite to your wing

Plan is to check it out now. Haven't really played much since it launched since, well, it launched a bit prematurely. Will see about adding you whenever I do get around to playing.
The Vulture, new ship added this patch, looks really nice.
