In my desktop I have Windows 7 Ultimate on an SSD, Data on a 7200 spin HDD. The longest part of my boot is the BIOS post. I considered getting a 2nd one for whatever games I am currently playing, but honestly, I don't find any significant load times from the HDD.
My laptop has a single SSD, and that is blisteringly quick. I'll be testing SWTOR on it later today, so I'll let you know how it performs compaired to my desktop
Is anyone playing swtor from a SSD?

It will get bigger, yes, but on the ratio, it will be the same as WoW.
Twice the actual content and ToR is already over WoW folder size.
19 Gb is the actual size of the game now with all it's content (walls, ceiling, voice acting, ...). Don't ask them to create four times over a year, what took them five years to create.
The downloads will be bigger than those of WoW. But won't never have 20 Gb download for a patch/upgrade.

Re: Is anyone playing swtor from a SSD?
Actually, for the sort of games that benefit most from being on an SSD, MMO's are right on top. Especially when it comes to logging in into a main city.
Which makes sense.
However, what's not right for an SSD, is writing and rewriting. Which I remember was a topic for concern on ElitistJerks a while ago.
It was mostly about WoW though ofcourse, but the eventual point made was a good one.
WoW, with all its addons and logging to files, performs quite some rewriting action.
But the conclusion was that unless you run an insane amount of addons, it doesn't do that more then your OS does.
And since SSDs are deemed perfect to be the OS disk, with that same logic, they were deemed perfect to be the disk of choice for your MMO.
After all, you buy such a thing to get the largest benefit possible.
Hope that answers it.
Ps: When I deleted my WoW folder a couple months back, it was 39.5 gigs large. A fresh install makes it much smaller though, but every time they release a big patch the install files are saved to your disk. I can only guess how it will be for SWTOR, but I'd guess its probably the same. But then there's ofcourse also your addons and the screenshots. Which start to take some space in time as well.

Tested and "didn't see a differance". I suspect when the population is higher, it'll have an advantage.Faye wrote:My laptop has a single SSD, and that is blisteringly quick. I'll be testing SWTOR on it later today, so I'll let you know how it performs compaired to my desktop

Running W7 and TOR on my 55,8 GB (actual space) SSD, now 2,5 GB left and shrinking :0
Guess I'm going to have to move it to the 1TB HDD sooner or later...or get a new SSD just for games and apps. This brings up a question though:
If you had one average SSD and one very fast SSD, which would it make sense to install the OS on if you couldnt fit both TOR and OS in the same?

Re: Is anyone playing swtor from a SSD?
although i don't own a ssd yet, i'd put the OS on the fastest disk, i think at the end of the day the OS is still more important for performance than the game files?
a new ssd question though... if i buy a 6gbs ssd disk, but only use it at the older 3gbs speed would that impact it's performance at all when i get a new mobo later which then does support 6gbs?

Re: Is anyone playing swtor from a SSD?
I would definitely install my OS on the faster SSD for many reasons. If you only care about game performance, consider the fact that while your system is on a faster drive, windows will work faster with memory (swap being on ssd) and it will be able to access graphical drivers and any other ddl data it might need to run the game faster.
I still believe that you will probably get a better performance by installing both OS and your chosen game on the same drive. Maybe you should consider selling your old SSD and just buying a new bigger one
On the other hand, checking different benchmarks, talking about gaming, you will most probably not notice any difference between two drives since they will already give you the maximum performance you could probably gain by running your game on a faster storage device.

Re: Is anyone playing swtor from a SSD?
How well does TOR use ram btw?
Just curious because I have 12gb DDR3 (it was spare from work lol)
Edit: I am actually just going to leave SWTOR on its own SSD then I dont need to worry about space. I'm going to use NTFS symbolic link via mklink command to redirect all appdata stuff /cache etc for SWTOR.
Found out that ,that makes most difference. The OS being on a SSD helps only with boot times really and if you use a junction to point the cache for the game to the ssd its blindingly fast

Re: Is anyone playing swtor from a SSD?
I played beta on my old HD and installed a new SSD with a clean install of W7 and it's definitely a noticeable difference. The old HD wasn't anything high tech though. So if you have a drive with a big cache and 7200rpm etc the difference might not be as noticeable. Really want a new vid card now.
