As said, you can compare items in your inventory automatically against your companion's equipped items. Note that you do need to have your character sheet open on the companion tab though (see screenie).

I did the same as Pata too, and only compared with ours, not with hers. Had only one of the comparing labels.

There was an interface box to be ticked to do it.
